Burial of the Sardine

Every year, Portol celebrates the Burial of the Sardine, an act that imitates the funerals that took place in the past. This symbolically marks the end of the Marratxí carnival and the beginning of Lent.

The protagonist of this particular funeral is a sardine made of wood and paper, approximately 2 metres long, which is carried on the back, accompanied by a procession of mourners, and the public joins in as it passes by.

In addition, the municipal music band plays funeral marches along the route until it reaches the square, where the sardine is thrown into the fire after going round the bonfire three times.
